In the late 1800's, the Boston and Klondike company made the first sled dog trail through Big Lake into the Talkeetna Mountains. Homesteaders made their way to Big Lake in the 1920's, with more settlers arriving after World War II. Since then, the area has continued to grow and Big Lake today has a population of approximately 2,700 people.
Activities in Big Lake include water and jet-skiing on the lake, as well as boating, canoeing and fishing. In the winter, ice-fishing, snowmachining and cross country skiing on the lake are enjoyed by all. There are public use cabins for rent, picnic areas and a small assortment of restaurants, grocery stores and shopping in the town itself. There are several bed and breakfasts, as well as the luxurious Sunset View Resort, which sits right on the lake and offers top notch accommodations and services for weddings and conferences.
